Carolyn LaRose Southern New Hampshire University Introduction Communication is part of our everyday life and is a phatic function. We use it to express ourselves and have others understand us. Over the last decade, the use of social media has become more prominent amount children and adults. It is the way that we communicate from these forms that can create a whole new culture. Previous forms of communication before social media were letter writing, talking on the phone, or speaking face to face. With every generation we create a new way to function and create relationships with someone else. Part of the use of Facebook is a promotion of yourself or product. With the display of a profile picture it could provide great a sense of narcissism. We want to present the best form of ourselves for everyone to witness. The better the picture the more likes we will receive egging on our ego. 70% of the interviewed go to social platforms as soon as they switch on their computers. This speaks about priorities: usually, people choose the most important things to do first. Checking the Facebook as a first activity of the day already points to some kinds of addiction. (Runcan, 2017, p. 90) Every time we log on to check our responses to a post within a social media account, our ego can also take a blow when the desired response is not received. We can start to envy our friends and family when they are receiving responses and our mood can start to form into a depression. Each time a lack of response is received depression can grow stronger. Cyberbullying comes in three parts. There is the cyberbully, the cyber victim, and the cyber bystander (Harper, 2017, p. 1). Cyberbullying is new in our culture, there is a lot of research to help adolescents and parents respond to it. As teenagers grow into their own being, they start to form friendships with other teens like them.
